Arrival in Salvador and Transport to Hotel
WIU JSO Group arrives at Salvador International Airport on American Airlines #239 and is transported by Executive Coach to the Catussaba Resort Hotel.

10:00 to 18:00
Time to rest, relax and enjoy the pool and beach at the Catussaba Resort Hotel.

Lunch at Catussaba Resort Hotel (paid for by each person unless sponsorship is secured)

18:00 to 19:30
Dinner at Touro Louco (the Crazy Bull) which is a short walk from the Catussaba Resort Hotel. Sponsored by Doug Adair and Isaias Rabelo of ORS Multimídia in Salvador, Bahia.

20:00 to 22:00
The “Welcome Event”, which is free and open to the public, includes special performances by noted musicians and groups from Bahia. Márcio Pereira and his Sarava Jazz Band are the night’s featured performers. Márcio Pereira is a native of Bahia who has a Graduate Degree in Music from the University of New Orleans. Sarava mixes Afro-Brazilian beats with New Orleans jazz and is expected to be joined by other guest musicians from Bahia. The evening also includes a brief performance by WIU JSO to ensure that all equipment is in good working order. The “Welcome Event” is scheduled to conclude with a Jam Session if time allows. Support for the event is being provided by Doug Adair and Isaias Rabelo of ORS Multimídia Interativa LTDA, Laurent Rivemales of Bahia Piano and the Catussaba Resort.

Visit to Imbassai, an idyllic, small town tourist destination with a beach bordered on one side by the ocean and on the other side by a river. Jangadas (gondola boats powered and maneuvered by long poles) ferry visitors to the beach.

Time for relaxation and fun on the Praia (Beach) of Imbassai.

Lunch at the Praia of Imbassai (paid for by each person unless sponsorship is secured).

Time to take a shower, change clothes and have Dinner at Jerimum Café – Nega Fulô Pizzaria in Imbassai. Sponsored by André Gustavo de Moura, owner of Jerimum Café – Nega Fulô Pizzaria in Imbassai

Concert by WIU JSO in Imbassai. On the evening of Friday, March 14 at 8:30 pm, the WIU Jazz Studio Orchestra (JSO) will present a concert in Imbassai, one of Bahia’s most scenic tourist villages located on the Northeast (or Coconut) Coast, one hour north of Salvador’s international airport. The event is free and open to the public. Support for the event is being provided by the Prefeitura of Mata de São João and André Gustavo de Moura, owner of Jerimum Café – Nega Fulô Pizzaria in Imbassai.

Visit to Arembepe, 30 minutes north of Salvador International Airport, which regarded as one of Bahia’s best beach resort towns. Arembepe is famous for having been a “hippie village” frequented by international music stars such as Janis Joplin and the Rolling Stones during the 1960s.

Dinner at one of numerous seafood restaurants on the Square in Arembepe which is next to the beach (paid for by each person unless sponsorship is secured).

WIU JSO will visit Salvador for a city tour and orientation to Salvador’s Historic Center known as the Pelourinho. The visit includes a special session on the history and evolution of Brazilian music by Randy Roberts, the tour’s English-speaking tour guide (originally from Indianapolis, Indiana) who is a specialist in local music and the owner of Cana Brava Records in the Pelourinho. The tour of the Pelourinho will conclude with a visit to Cubana Sorvete (ice cream and sandwich shop), which is near Cana Brava Records, for a quick snack before the Dr. Bruce Briney and Dr. Heinz Schwebel concert.

WIU JSO will attend a concert presented by Dr. Bruce Briney, Professor of Trumpet at WIU and Dr. Heinz Schwebel, Diretor of the School of Music at UFBA and Principal Trumpet in the Orchestra of the State of Bahia, and the Orchestra of UFBA.
Location: Igreja Santa Tereza (Saint Tereza Church) which is near the Pelourinho.

The WIU JSO has the option of visiting a tourism site in Salvador or watching a film in a multiplex in one of the local shopping center. All individuals with student IDs receive half-price admission in accordance with Federal Laws of Brazil.

WIU Jazz Studio Orchestra performs in the Teatro at the State University of Bahia (UNEB) campus in Salvador’s Cabula neighborhood. Isaias Rabelo, pianist; Doug Adair, singer-songwriter and WIU alumnus; and the Harmonica Zone Trio (Zona Harmônica) comprised of Breno Pádua, harmonica player and UNEB PhD student who has also studied at WIU Quad Cities; Luiz Rocha, harmonica player; e Ramon El-Bachá, bass harmonica player are invited guest artists. Support for the event is being provided by UNEB.

WIU JSO will conduct workshops with NEOJIBA, music students from UFBA and the Catholic University of Salvador (UCSAL), youth music groups from FUNCEB, and Filârmonicas.

Location: Restaurante Amado which overlooks the Bay of All Saints

The featured event on Thursday, March 20 at 7:30 pm at Restaurante Amado is an “Invitational Play-Off” to select and honor “Talented Music Students of Jazz” (all contestants must be music students) in the categories of Trumpet, Saxophone, Trombone, Flute, Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums and Percussion. This special, friendly competition among selected (invited) student musicians from WIU and music programs in Bahia is designed to showcase the important role music education plays in developing young people’s lives and is expected to be one of the highlights of the WIU 2014 Music Education Mission & JSO Tour. Support for the event is being provided by Chef Edinho Engel and Restaurante Amado, one of Bahia’s top restaurants.
Local: Restaurante Amado is located on the Bay of All Saints (Baia de Todos os Santos) at Av. Lafayete Coutinho, 660 (also known as the Contorno) in Salvador’s scenic and historic Lower City.

The day is devoted to special activities including a Schooner Cruise on the Bay of All Saints / Baía de Todos os Santos, the second largest fresh water bay in the world, including lunch on the Island of Itaparica / Ilha de Itaparica.

Schooner Cruise in the Bay of All Saints / Baía de Todos os Santos.

Lunch on the Island of Itaparica / Ilha de Itaparica (cost of lunch included with Schooner Cruise paid by WIU)

Time to make souvenir purchases at Mercado Modelo after the Schooner Cruise and then walk (using Salvador’s famous Elevador) or travel by van or taxi to Doug Adair’s house in Santo Antônio Historic Center near the Pelourinho to take a shower and enjoy beverages followed by dinner in one of the inexpensive (but quite good) scenic, local restaurants in Santo Antônio (paid by each person unless a sponsor is secured).

Return by van to the Catussaba Resort Hotel for those who want to go back to the hotel

Last Night in Salvador – A Free Night for those who want to enjoy live music and the lively street scene in Salvador. Interested members of WIU JSO are invited to participate in a weekly Jazz Jam Session hosted by Laurent Rivemales of Bahia Piano near the oceanfront in the Boca de Rio neighborhood of Salvador and then to go on to Rio Vermelho or another one of Salvador’s entertainment zones.
