Heads Up! Vai Com Tudo! Kickstarter Project – English

“Heads Up! Heads Up!” / “Vai com Tudo de Cabeça!”

Esportes & Música Vão Juntos! / Sports & Music Go Together!

I am asking for your participation in and support for the audio and video recording of “Heads Up! Heads Up!” / “Vai com Tudo de Cabeça!”.

As you probably know, the 2014 World Cup of Soccer / 2014 Copa do Mundo de Futebol in Brazil has become quite controversial for a number of reasons. “Heads Up! Heads Up!” / “Vai com Tudo de Cabeça!” is a music and video recording project designed to send a positive message and increase awareness about the importance of providing music education and sports education for all in the State of Bahia as well as other regions of Brazil. Unlike many other countries, Brazil does not have universal music and sports education in its schools and people are working to change this. Our objective is to transform the controversy about investments in the 2014 World Cup / 2014 Copa do Mundo and even the tournament itself into something positive and encouraging instead of something negative and damaging for Brazilians.

“Heads Up! Heads Up!” / “Vai com Tudo de Cabeça!” is a rally song created for performance at sporting events, in this case for futebol or soccer games, and during victory celebrations. The integration of sporting events and music is not typical in Brazil like it is the US and other countries. “Heads Up! Heads Up!” / “Vai com Tudo de Cabeça!” is a combination of “Let’s Go Necks” or “Let’s Go Now!”, a rally song from Western Illinois University in the US (where I graduated many years ago from the College of Fine Arts and Communication), and a new blues-rock melody I composed. The lyrics have been translated to Portuguese by my friends and colleagues Lara Garcia Mueller, Ivan Huol, Nancy Viégas and Márcio Pereira. Arranged by Ricardo “Cabo” Sibalde, the song includes a powerful horn section similar to a jazz big band. The “Heads Up! Heads Up!” / “Vai com Tudo de Cabeça!” metaphor serves to remind everyone to use their heads not only in winning games but in succeeding in life as well. Music education and sports education help people develop important skills and abilities such as self-discipline, collaboration, problem-solving, conflict resolution, mathematical reasoning, listening, leadership, planning, and more.

Some of Salvador, Bahia’s top musicians as well as musicians from other regions of Brazil and countries around the world are collaborating to record the song and produce a video clip of “Heads Up! Heads Up!” / “Vai com Tudo de Cabeça!”. The song is being premiered during the 2014 World Cup / 2014 Copa do Mundo and the video is being recorded at numerous live performances of the song during June and July. I hope you will join with us in supporting this important initiative.

The recording of the “Heads Up! Heads Up!” / “Vai com Tudo de Cabeça!” song and video is designed to complement another project entitled “Expanding Music Education & Sports Education across Bahia”. To this point in time, we have focused on exchanges between Western Illinois University in the State of Illinois in the US and the State of Bahia, Brazil, including UFBA – the Federal University of Bahia; UNEB – the State University of Bahia; the Prefeitura of Salvador, Bahia; JAM NO MAM; Teatro Cidade do Saber and the Prefeitura of Camaçari, Bahia; Imbassai, Praia do Forte and the Prefeitura of Mata de São João, Bahia; and others.

Proceeds from the sale of the completed “Heads Up! Heads Up!” / “Vai com Tudo de Cabeça!” song and video and revenues from licensing of the song, video and intellectual property will go to the Western Illinois University Foundation and will be used to benefit various program components of “Expanding Music Education & Sports Education across Bahia” such as music education scholarships, student and professor exchanges, collection and distribution of used musical instruments, technical assistance and technology transfer.

Sincerely,

Doug Adair
